The Hillbilly Jukebox Show, Special October Surprise Edition, airs Saturday, October 3rd, 4 to 6 p.m.
TJ Meekins and Ginna Allison co-host Classic Country, Hillbilly, Bluegrass and Western Swing, featuring The Stanley Brothers of Virginia.
Four years after his death, Ralph Stanley lives on as a legendary figure in traditional bluegrass music.
In 1972, when Ginna was 17—the same age as the two new members of the band, Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley—she got free tickets to a Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys concert held as a benefit for the local police. She hadn’t wanted to go, but what she saw turned her into a lifelong bluegrass fan.
The magical combination of players only lasted three years. Ginna was lucky to have seen them. Bluegrass pundits call Ralph Stanley’s discovery of Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley in 1970—you’ll hear more about that in the program— one of the greatest finds of talent in modern bluegrass history.
Keith Whitley stayed with Ralph Stanley seven years. Keith was on his way to a brilliant career in mainstream Country when he died in 1989, at 33 years of age. Ricky Skaggs at 66 remains a leading light in Country Music. – TJ Meekins & Ginna Allison
