Sandra – One Immigrant’s Story
October 22, 2018
In the mid-90s Sandra Sandoval left her native Guatemala and came north to the US, crossing the Rio Grande in an inner tube. She was horrifically abused by her then-husband, who was a member of the Kaibil, the elite special forces, in the Guatemalan military. I met her when I volunteered to be her pro bono interpreter through the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights. She has since attained asylum, then legal permanent residence status, and U.S. citizenship. She is proud to be a voter.
