Meet 'Gaelic Americana' Music Artist Kyle Carey

Steve Baker

That sly KVMR 89.5 FM volunteer folk disc jockey Laurie DesJardin is at it again.

Four years ago, the Nevada City eclectic radio station's first house concert in its new home featured the acclaimed harmonies of Brother Sun, in a show Laurie lovingly produced.

This time around, she's found another rising folk star:  self-proclaimed "Gaelic Americana" artist Kyle Carey, a 31-year-old New Hampshire native who somehow found herself in the Celtic waters, nourished herself there and...

"I find her music so captivating and relaxing --  with the combination of intricate lyrics and lovely melodies, interesting perspectives and varied influences, like Celtic, Cajun and Appalachian," beams DesJardin.

"She's simply a delightful performer as well, with great stories and beautiful songs," according to DesJardin.

Carey will perform  Monday, Jan. 28 in the KVMR Community Room in a 8 p.m. show that will also be simulcast on KVMR 89.5 FM (105.1 FM Truckee, kvmr.org streaming). Tickets are available online at kvmr.org/events or by calling the KVMR office weekdays at 530/265-9073.

"I love the KVMR community room as a place to present music," noted DesJardin. "It's a very intimate room which allows the audience to really feel like they are getting to know the artist.  And because we can broadcast the show, the artist gets the added bonus of greater exposure, to share their music with radio and internet listeners anywhere in the world."

Laurie discovered Kyle by playing some of her music on her alternate Friday "The New Brick Road" program (10 a.m. to noon, including this Friday, the 25th). Before you knew it, Kyle managed to stop by Laurie's show and play live.

"You can see how charming she is by how she presents herself, her appreciation of nature, and her vivid descriptions of place and mood," added DesJardin.

TOP 20 ALBUM

Now Brooklyn-based, Carey's most recent (2018) album, "The Art Of Forgetting," was named one of folk music's top twenty albums of the year by PopMatters.

Says critic Jonathan Frahm, "Lending a mindful ear to proceedings, it’s clear and quickly uncovered that Carey’s musical fusion is far more than a gimmick – it’s something innate and uniquely hers that offers an intangibly captivating spice to her work."

Not bad for a folksinger who was a onetime waitress at a place in Saratoga Springs, New York, one of local hero U. Utah Phillips' favorite haunts.

"Aside from being highly adventurous, I returned to folk music in college while volunteering at a place called Caffe Lena – which is the oldest continuously running folk venue in North America," said Carey. "I was deeply inspired by the musicians I saw perform there and decided to pursue a career in folk music myself."

The lucky 25 or so will see this real deal next Monday night in the KVMR Community Room; others will hear it live on KVMR (89.5 FM, 105.1 FM Truckee, kvmr.org streaming).
