Jim James - Eternally Even - Capitol Records
Eternally Even is the second solo album by Jim James, released on November 4, 2016.
Ryan Leas of Pitchfork.com says, “Jim James' new solo album contains some of his most psychedelic music, as well as his most directly topical lyrics, offering new ways for him to wield his otherworldly voice. James goes all-in on a frayed, psychedelic-soul aesthetic—“True Nature” sounds like an old funk song dropped in an aquarium. Many of the songs are built off of small instrumental passages that weave the album together: The simmering, festering bed of synths, bass and guitar in opener “Hide in Plain Sight” recurs in “We Ain’t Getting Younger Pt. 1,” which in turn pairs with its Pt. 2 to create the monumental core of the record. Eternally Even has also been touted as his most directly political writing of his career—pointedly released just before Election Day.”
D.D Dumbo - Utopia Defeated - 4AD
Performing solo with a 12-string electric guitar, two drums and a bunch of effect pedals, Oliver Perry, aka D.D Dumbo made an impression at the 2013 SXSW Music conference. In the following 12 months he was invited to support the likes of Warpaint, Tune-Yards, St Vincent, Jungle, Iron & Wine, and do live sessions for NPR, Daytrotter and BBC Radio 1. Soon after D.D Dumbo signed to 4AD, and in 2014 he toured the UK for the first time, supporting both Daughter and Tame Impala.
D.D Dumbo has meticulously taken his time in order to craft something with a bit more resonance and staying power. The end result is his new album, Utopia Defeated, which thankfully sees the man’s greater vision for the D.D Dumbo project realised and – to a degree – actualised in resplendent technicolour.
Utopia Defeated has been nominated for triple j Australian Album of the Year.
Remembering Leonard Cohen
Leonard Norman Cohen, is a Canadian singer, songwriter, poet and novelist. His work has explored religion, politics, isolation, sexuality, and personal relationships. Cohen has been inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour. In 2011, Cohen received one of the Princess of Asturias Awards for literature.
Leonard Cohen has rarely been seen in public since he wrapped up his "Grand Tour" at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand, on December 21st, 2013, with a joyous encore of the Drifters' "Save the Last Dance for Me." That five-year, 387-date global odyssey – where he played for well over three hours a night – was a massive musical (and financial) success. But not long after, Cohen began to suffer serious physical problems. "Among many other things, he had multiple fractures of the spine," says his son Adam. "He has a lot of hard miles on him."
Leonard Cohen was 82 years old.
You Want It Darker is the fourteenth studio album by Leonard Cohen, released on October 21, 2016 by Columbia Records.
