Esperanza Spalding - Emily's D+Evolution

Esperanza Spalding - Emily’s D+Evolution - Concord Music Group

Esperanza Emily Spalding is an American jazz bassist, cellist and singer, who draws upon many genres in her own compositions.

Spalding was raised in Portland, Oregon and was a musical prodigy, playing violin in the Chamber Music Society of Oregon at age five. She was later both self-taught and trained on multiple instruments, including guitar and bass. Her proficiency earned her scholarships to Portland State University and the Berklee College of Music.

She has won four Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Award for Best New Artist at the 53rd Grammy Awards, making her the first jazz artist to win the award.

Her new album Emily’s D+Evolution is a tight package that should appeal to fans of Janelle Monáe and Joni Mitchell’s more jazzy endeavors, or anyone who is looking for some well crafted, ambiguous music, with elements of jazz, rock, and folk accompanied with some stellar singing.

Thao and The Get Down Stay Down - A Man Alive!

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - A Man Alive - Ribbon Music

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down is a San Francisco, California-based (formerly of Falls Church, Virginia) alternative folk rock music group.

A Man Alive is the fourth studio album by Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, released on the Ribbon Music label in early March 2016.

Her fourth album, A Man Alive!, is something of a full-circle move. Built from the bottom end on up, it's Nguyen's most rhythmically robust, gleefully discordant release to date. It also marks a return to the more self-analytical approach of her earliest efforts, yielding her most candid songwriting yet. These two approaches never feel at odds with each other somehow, and instead, A Man Alive! reinforces the symbiotic relationship between personal trauma and ecstatic physical release.

Todd's Two Too! airs Friday mornings 8:30-9:00 during Jerianne's Morning Show on 89.5 KVMR FM Nevada City.
