A Goodbye to Gary

General Manager's picture

Our dear Legends broadcaster, Gary Browning, passed away in November after having been ill.  For the past few years, Gary was the host of "Legends", a regular overnight show once monthly on early Sunday mornings (12am-4amSundays) as well as other Red Eye Radio work.

Gary was also quite a volunteer for KVMR.  He regularly did outreach at public events in and around Auburn. And was a valued volunteer at KVMR music and book sales over the years.

Memories from fellow broadcasters:

"I remember the first time I invited him to sit in one Sunday afternoon when I was subbing on Blues Spectrum. From the start of the show he was interested in everything going on and it didn't take long to know he was hooked as I was upon my introduction to the board, turntables and everything involved in how a show is broadcast. His eyes lit up like a kid at Christmas when I told him about the upcoming broadcaster training class. Before he applied for the class he was sitting in on my Saturday show, 4-7am and throughout the class he would let me know what was happening and ask questions. He got in touch with Ralph Henson soon after certification and became a regular in a Sunday morning red-eye slot with "Legends."

Volunteering for outreach at the Auburn Farmers Market and other events became a habit Gary enjoyed. After some events he would return the outreach gear to my house and we would end up introducing each other to vinyl or cds new to one of us and trading stories of concerts from our past.

Other than that he was just a great, easy going person to know and spend time with."   ~Kim

"Gary Browning followed me on Saturday nights for several years.  He was a great guy with an impeccable taste for guitar legends.  The late night listeners loved his show.  Gary's quiet eccentricity exemplified what's really right about the KVMR trip.  I'm gonna miss him.  We who knew him are richer and we're all a bit poorer for his passing."  ~Richard

There will be no services; KVMR will honor his passing at our volunteer party Tuesday night, Dec 15th.

If you have memories to share or thoughts to pass along, please email me:  gm@kvmr.org and I will post here and pass along to his partner, Tobi.

Best wishes to you on your journey Gary.  You will be missed.
