Achilles Wheel to the Alvins & Beyond: KVMR DJs List Top 5 Picks for 2014

Written by on January 14, 2021

As the year turns, a variety of KVMR 89.5 FM broadcasters have compiled their Top 5 lists of favorites for 2014 music releases.

And the results just show how wide that variety of music is, although some deejays at the eclectic, non-commercial Nevada City station don’t count very well (meaning they couldn’t decide on just five).

And those who made comments about their choices may fall out of our print format, but that’s what happens when you get all talky like that. Thanks to all who participated.

Meri St Mary, The Underground Sound, alternate Sundays 10pm-Midnight

1 – Marianne Faithfull – “Give My Love To London” – Marianne et al moved me from the 1st listen until now. Collaborating w/ Nick Cave & Brian Eno (among other illustrious musicians) I can only articulate with these words: volatile, unpredictable, intellectual, insightful, savage, soothing & complete! December 2014 what a cool way to begin & end the year.

2 – Siouxsie Sioux & Steven Severin – “It’s A Wonderful Life”  – a journey into sound compiled by both of the above for a limited compilation. Diverse, eclectic, loads of fun. Bitchin instrumentals of obscure theme songs & a Lotte Lenya (w/Roger Bean & Orchestra) track that is worth the price of admission. November 2014

3 – Thee Instagon Foundation – “Big California Noise Compilation” – featuring 143 tracks no longer then 2 minutes each representing a plethora of “sound artists” from the Sunshine State bringing a solid representation of the Noise scene which has had a vibrant following/creations for years. Here in one setting experimentation in an arena with no melodies to speak of. How can young kids rebel these days & hear those words “turn down that noise! what is that noise?” well, right here in this ginormous offering! September 2014

4 – Fever Crash –  “Crazy Flower” – new work from Paul Fleming (from SF art punk luminaries The Mutants). He plays all the instruments, sings & produced his first solo work. Happy to hear folks from stellar bands go out on their own to show growth, experience & a current outlook on life as it is now. Love this for all those reasons & more. Kudos Paul. December 2014

5 – Scissor Vision – self titled/self release available on cassette only, this local band of outsider creatives in their late teens ONLY use analog recording & equipment. Thus presenting a sound & look true to the original spirit of punk from back in the day! November 2014

Honorable Mention: James Horvath– self titled-local synth beats & numerous yard sale finds he fixes up into a stream of consciousness listening. He has been peddling his homemade cassette tape for YEARS. In 2014 he made 6 (yes Six) original theme songs for the underground sound/KVMR. I play them regularly & am quite honored I just HAD to mention.
