2010’s Decade In Review: Our Favorite Musical Memories

Written by on January 3, 2020

Although the sun has set on the 2010’s, some of our KVMR & KVMRx broadcasters have taken the time to sift through the past decade & highlight some of the more memorable albums & musical experiences that went down these past ten years. Here’s gems of the 2010’s.

Steve Cagle – Blues Spectrum – Sundays 1pm-3pm

Favorite Albums Of The Decade (2010-2019):

2010    Otis Taylor – Clovis People Vol. 3 (Telarc, 5/11/10)

2011    Soul of John Black – Good Thang (Yellow Dog, 6/7/11)

2012    Heritage Blues Orchestra – And Still I Rise (MRI, 2/28/12)

2013    Dumpstaphun – Dirty Word (Louisiana Red Hot, 7/30/13)

2014    Jack Hadley – The St. Louis Sessions (San Telmo Media, 10/21/14)

2015    JJ Grey & Mofro – Ol’ Glory (Provogue 2/24/15)

2016    Thornetta Davis  – Honest Woman (Sweet Mama Music, 9/23/16)

2017    Southern Avenue – Southern Avenue (Concord/Stax, 2/24/17)

2018    Fantastic Negrito – Please Don’t Be Dead (Blackball Universe, 6/15/18)

2019    Toronzo Cannon – The Preacher, the Politician or the Pimp (Alligator, 9/20/19)

Favorite Album Of The Decade (2010-2019)

Very difficult to give a single album this accolade, but if you held a chicken enchilada to my head and said it was loaded, I’d probably go with JJ Grey & Mofro, Ol’ Glory (Provogue 2/24/15). Excellent feel-good songs and some of JJ’s most inspired writing and singing.

Favorite Song Of The Decade (2010-2019)
“Don’t Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down,” by Eric Bibb and Charlotte Hoglund.  Eric first recorded it in 1997 and several times since, and it may be his most covered song, including many versions in the past decade.  My personal favorite is by the Heritage Blues Orchestra on their 2012 album “And Still I Rise.”

Favorite KVMR Live Broadcast  (2010-2019)

World Music Festival

Favorite Music Festival Of The Decade (2010-2019)

Portland Waterfront Blues Festival

Favorite Record Label Of The Decade (2010-2019):

Little Village Foundation – Jim Pugh’s amazing gift to musicians and music-lovers, producing dozens of music and spoken word albums that might have never been released for the past five years and counting.  Thank you Jim!

Favorite KVMR Memories Of The Decade:

  • Sunday afternoon on-air performance of Joy and Madness, with all 9 band members playing in the KVMR community room. – 11/27/2016
  • Broadcasting the Johnny Knox appreciation event from the Torch Club – 8/7/2016

Todd Wahoske – Todd’s Two Too! – Alt. Fridays 8:30am-9am

Favorite Album Of The Decade (2010-2019)

The National – Trouble Will Find Me (4AD, 2013)

Favorite KVMR Live Broadcast  (2010-2019)

2015 High Sierra Music Festival – God it was hot! But, I got to camp with all the cool Broadcasters like Wesley, Russ, Sean, Jerianne, Buzz, Kim, Lynn, Allen, and so many more fun people. This was before we had the infamous FCC button and we kept having to switch stages and shut-down early each night due to all the potty mouth bad words. We camped in tight quarters and were awoken by a marching band at 4 AM after going to bed at 3:00, then roasting in the sun by 8:00 AM. Not much sleep, but very fun!

Runner up

2017 Worldfest – The KVMR booth was positioned close to the left of the main stage. It was loud and dusty and all the other broadcasters complained about it, but I totally loved being in the crowd of people, yet being removed and broadcasting live. I guess I don’t mind loud and dusty!

Favorite Music Festival Of The Decade (2010-2019)

Burning Man 2012

Favorite Record Label Of The Decade (2010-2019)

4AD
