When people ask Gary what kind of music he plays on Crooked Highway, he has a difficult time answering because, like the name of the show says, it goes in many directions. Listeners might hear classic folk music from Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, or Lead Belly. Then comes some acoustic blues with J.B. Lenoir, Big Bill Broonzy, or Guy Davis. He also likes to play contemporary rockers like Jon Dee Graham, Alejandro Escovedo, and Kathleen Edwards (Their more quiet, Sunday morning-friendly songs, of course). Indie folk artists like Cindy Lee Berryhill and the Felice Brothers might show up now and again. Gary also loves traditional old time music, as well as the modern string bands, putting their own twist on tradition (The Mammals and Carolina Chocolate Drops, for example). And then there's all that great Cajun music... and country music... and Mexican music... and...
So if you're wondering what the Crooked Highway is all about, Gary might say, "It's a bucket full of folky bluesy mostly acoustic indie roots music, and some other stuff." Better yet, he encourages you to see his playlists at http://kvmrcrookedhighway.blogspot.com/..
