Dan Scanlan with Julia Butterfly

Whether 20 years at KVMR has resulted in Dan Scanlan's eclectic resume or Dan Scanlan's eclectic resume has resulted in 20 years at KVMR is the second conundrum after the chicken/egg debate.

He has "a speckled work history as a writer, English teacher, reporter, photographer, videographer, programmer, graphic artist, information systems manager, auto mechanic, repair shop owner, handyman and manufacturer of baseball batting cages."

Artistic influences include: Edith Hamilton, Tom Paine, Margaret Mead, Mark Twain, Marshal McLuhan, Winona LaDuke, Wilhelm Reich and John Lennon.

Since 1963 he has been a musician and songwriter and is recognized "in various pockets of the world" as a ukulele virtuoso. The recognition may be confined to "various pockets" but the virtuosity is a given.

In 1998 he took his ukulele and two other American players to the island of Madeira, Portugal, from whence the pint-sized guitar originated, along with the fortified dessert wine of the same name. There Maestro Dan taught Madeiran folk musicians to play the ukulele and in turn he learned to play the braguinha, one of the two forerunners of the ukulele. As part of the project they performed in a televised concert, at the Lisbon World's Fair.

Dan's real forte is as a producer; he has produced every kind of program at KVMR with various names that betray his English teacher qualifications. Such classics as: Rodd Gnawkin's Rude Awakening Morning Show; Tunesday Live; Stoop in' Wayover with the News; Hillbilly Jukebox; Young Persons' Radio Drama Writing Contest; Tunesday Live News with Dan Ratherthan; Some of My Best Friends Are Women; Kids Alive; and with KVMR News Director, Joan Buffington, Who Cares?, a Sound Partners For Community Health Radio Project.

His current production, End of the Trail Saloon is described as "Live music, comedy, drama, call-ins, and poetry in an old-time saloon setting. We aim to entertain and inspire folks to laugh and call in to join the fray."
