Brian Terhorst, host of Harmony Ridge, with wife AmyFormerly KVMR's General Manager, Brian Terhorst arrived at KVMR as an office volunteer in the fall of 1991. Then new to Nevada County, he saw volunteer service as a great way to make friends and do something valuable on his day off. He enrolled in the Broadcaster Training Class of 1992 "just for fun," and completed the course with fellow broadcasters, Michael Keene, Alice MacAllister, Chris Towne, George Olson, and Jenny Michaels.

Even before the 1992 training class had concluded, Brian received his first on-air assignment as the host of the early Friday morning shift. Within weeks of receiving that assignment, KVMR Program Director John Nichols had to step down from his celebrated program, "Saturday Morning Wireless" due to deteriorating health. Brian was ultimately selected to fill the Saturday morning slot and Harmony Ridge took to the air in the summer of 1992.

Broadcasting only fueled Brian's volunteer involvement at KVMR; he committed a full day each week in the business office helping with membership, underwriting, program scheduling, volunteered as the station's Volunteer Coordinator and served two terms on the Program Committee. In 1994, Brian joined the paid office staff as KVMR's first dedicated Membership Coordinator. Within a year, Brian had expanded his position to full time, adding responsibilities as KVMR's Events Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator. After having dabbled in nearly every aspect of the station's operations, Brian was hired as KVMR's General Manager in 1996.

As with many of our broadcasters, KVMR fulfilled one of Brian's lifelong fantasies to be a radio dj. Entranced with music since his boyhood in Virginia, Brian is classically trained in music and played soprano, alto and bass clarinet in four different bands in high school. With designs of pursuing music as a career, Brian moved to California in 1979 where Proposition 13 had dismantled most of the school music programs.

After graduating in 1981, Brian enrolled in college in the Bay Area, earning an Associate's Degree in Natural Science. He transferred to Sonoma State University where he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology with an emphasis in Archaeology. He completed his graduate studies at SSU, with coursework at UC Berkeley, in Cultural Resources Management and Architectural History.

From 1986 to 1991, Brian was a consulting Archaeologist and Architectural Historian working for SSU, Caltrans, The California State Office of Historic Preservation and as a private consultant. A contract with the Placer County Department of Museums brought him to the Foothills where he led an inventory of over 650 historic and prehistoric properties in Placer County. As a private consultant, Brian recorded the historic Loma Rica Ranch property in Nevada County and prepared the nomination for the Miners Foundry Cultural Center as a California Historical Landmark.

Over time, Brian grew disenchanted with the bureaucracy of the preservation movement and began exploring other avenues to help create a better world. KVMR provided that outlet.

Brian served as KVMR's General Manager from 1996 until early in 2006. Having completed many of the goals he had set out to achieve, he decided to step down while things were at their best and pursue other interests. During Brian's tenure as KVMR's General Manager, he was elected to represent KVMR on the governing Board of Directors of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB) in 2000 and, a year later, was elected Board Chair. Brian was re-elected to Chair the NFCB Board four more times and finally stepped down in 2006, following his departure from the KVMR staff.

In 2001, KVMR's Celtic Festival & Marketplace was to celebrate its fifth anniversary. The station was looking for a new producer and, among those to apply was a new local company called Empire Events. Owned by Amy Hanshaw, Empire Events was selected to produce the festival and, over the next ten months, Brian and Amy became fast friends. By the time the 2001 festival rolled around, they realized that their relationship was meant to be more than friendship.

Brian and Amy were married in 2004. When Brian left his position as KVMR's Manager, he joined Amy on the staff of Empire Events where they continue to produce the Celtic Festival as well as other local, regional and state conferences and events. Brian and Amy share music, laughter, spirituality, a beautiful home and a blessed life.
