Musings from the other side: Richard Dunk, Jazz On Film, Diva Steward, Mixologist & so much more…

Mikail Graham's picture

Richard Dunk is a long time KVMR broadcaster who has been sharing his take on music from the 4 corners of the world for nearly 20 years. He's one of the regular hosts of KVMR’s Dead Air, and on Night Roots for nearly that long as well. But where he’s been shining on his own for the past year and a half is as a top notch guest host on The Other Side featuring his ongoing Jazz On Film and Diva Series, plus a variety of one off’ and multi-genre specials like his current focus on rare Miles Davis recordings, and most recently his 1st of hopefully annual Yuletide Yahoo Xmas shows and more.

Besides just playing the tunes, Richard offers you recording info, backgrounds on the artists, and more mixed with a variety of great cocktail recipes harking back to the early days of The Other Side when every show presented the listener with a special cocktail mix.
If you haven’t caught an episode with Mr. Dunk then click your way over to our 2015 or 2014 archives and just do a quick search for his name and you’ll find quite a few to check out. With more being added regualry.

Below is Richard's schedule of upcoming shows for the first half of 2016 on The Other Side.

January 5, from 8p-10p
Completely Miles #2 (The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions)
With outtakes and alternates from the late 1968 sessions that yielded another Miles Davis masterpiece and one of the foundations of Fusion music. And, live tracks from stateside and European gigs in 1969 and 1970. Tunes as eccentric and exciting today as they were nearly 50 years ago. And, a taste of the original queen of Funk, Betty Mabry Davis. On the cocktail front, we’ll explore the American whiskey stinger.

February 2, from 8p-10p
Jazz On Film #9 (The New Wave II #1)
Remastered Jazz soundtracks from 13 films of the French, Italian, British, and American new wave of the late 1950s and early 1960s.  Titles include Jazz In Camera, Mental Cruelty, All Night Long, Too Late Blues, Eva, Une Femme Est Une, Femme, and Bay Of Angels.  How’s about a brandy Manhattan?

March 1, from 8p-10p
Completely Miles #3 (The Bitches Brew Sessions #1)

Outtakes, alternates, and live tracks from sessions and gigs both before and after the 1969 release of the third leg of Miles invention of Fusion music.  This is the real deal!  Music that’s still way ahead of its time more than 45 years later.  We’ll include another dose of Betty Mabry Davis’ inimitable Funk tunes – she is the one who got Miles to get up with it.  And, as for adult refreshment, we’ll discuss the Rob Roy made with American malt whiskey.

April 12, from 8p-10p
Jazz On Film #10 (Jazz In Polish Cinema – Out Of The Underground 1958-1967)

Remastered Jazz soundtracks from the mid-1960s composed by Krzysztof Komeda and Andrzej Trzaskowski and performed by brave and heretofore largely unheralded Polish hipsters.  Great stuff!  Titles include Night Train, Knife In The Water, Jazz Camping, Opening Tomorrow, and Innocent Sorcerers.  Let’s revisit the Rye Manhattan.

May 3, from 8p-10p
Jazz On Film #11 (The New Wave II #2)

More remastered Jazz soundtracks from another 13 films of the French, Italian, British, and American new wave of the late 1950s and early 1960s.  Titles include Satan In high Heels, The Hustler, Gli Arcangeli, La Notte, L’eau A La Rouche, The Little Fugitive, and Nowhere To Go.  Isn’t it about time we explored the Sazerac?

If you anxious to actually hear some of what Mr. Dunk is up too, I’ve posted a few links below to some of my favorite Other Side past shows so far to help get you started, along with a wide array of Cocktail mixtures to help keep you in the mood.
