It started out modestly. Ten watts in a tiny studio the size of a walk-in closet next to a transmitter on Banner Mountain. On that summer day in 1978, radio station KVMR sprang to life and from that moment on, Nevada City became a community with its own voice. For 30 years, hundreds of broadcasters, volunteers and staff - your neighbors -- have brought us the songs and stories of KVMR. It has been an era rich in music, news and opinion, and it has defined our little community throughout the region, and the world via the Internet.
Now, at 2,000 watts with a reach that extends 24/7 from Truckee to Sacramento and a professional staff at offices on Spring street, we realize that the only way to acknowledge this coming of age is to throw a party for you, our listeners.
Starting July 11, a two-day party celebration will take place at the Miner’s Foundry, which housed the station during the 80s and 90s. Friday night will kick off with a worldbeat dance party inside the historic venue after which KVMR was named (hence the call letters' acronym Victorian Museum Radio). Saturday we'll feature 8 acts from 12 noon until 5:30 pm in the Miners Foundry "Stone Hall," Green presentations by Power-Up of Nevada City plus another 9 acts in teh Miners Foundry "Great Hall."
Then Saturday night starting at 7:30 pm we'll have yet another concert inside the Foundry featuring local Americana groups. These events will be infused with the history of the station and, concurrently, of our community. Broadcasters, station staff, volunteers and, of course, musicians will be mingling throughout the day and we hope everyone comes out to meet us. And finally, to close out this important year, we are booking the Trailer Park Troubadours into the Amaral Building at the Fairgrounds for a New Years Eve party. KVMR board president Joey Jordan is running the show and anyone who knows Joey knows how much she loves the "Troubs." In conjunction with all of this, our webmaster, John Button, and founding broadcaster Mikail Graham have cooked up some cool ideas for the KVMR website to help showcase three decades of great music, interviews and live broadcasts which you can check out by clicking here.
Stay tuned to 89.5 for more details. And most of all, thanks to all of you. We love chatting with you when you call during membership drives and tell us why you listen and how much you enjoy having your very own community radio station.

Power Up - NC Imagine a world powered by the sun, wind, or regenerative sources. Energy sources that do not pollute our air, water or land. Energy that can be provided locally creating viable economies that benefit the masses. Imagine becoming so energy efficient we can reduce our dependency on oil and coal so much so that we can end unnesessary wars and senseless and devastating acts like "mountain top removal." Though this may seem impossible, today there are signs of hope and opportunity that were unfathomable only a few short years ago. All the problems we face today can be tackled with technologies that already exist... and human willpower. Join Power Up founders Kelly Casterson & Reinette Senum and various special guests for a fun, fact-filled series of presentations that will inspire and enlighten you about the possibilities for sustainable energy available to us all today.
